Welcome back! Today, we'll dive into part two of our four-part series.

💡Read Part 1: Accuracy [here].

We often speak in fragments because we assume our listeners can connect the dots in our thought process. Your listener might infer your intentions in a conversation based on body language, gestures, or familiarity.

If you're like me (or anyone from New Jersey), you likely talk with your hands when speaking, especially when excited or in the heat of a discussion. My close friends and family understand my verbal shorthand because we have an unspoken understanding.

Unfortunately, writing the way we speak can backfire because (1.) your readers can't (nor should they) guess your intentions when they don't know you personally; (2.) ambiguity can leave your readers feeling lost, or worse; (3.) they can miss your intended point entirely.

With everything you publish, write like you're meeting your reader for the first time because, in some cases, you are.

2- Clarity Tips:

  1. Follow an outline. Create a simple checklist to keep you on track with your message's main points.

  2. Check your flow. Examine every paragraph of your writing for run-on sentences or bullet thoughts you can string together to ensure a clear stream of thought.

  3. Read your work aloud. How does it sound to you? Reading your writing aloud can help you find flow gaps or incomplete thoughts.

  4. Choose your tone. Feel free to infuse your copy with your personality, but decide who you are to your audience (e.g., teacher, guide, expert, etc.) and how you relate to them (i.e., is your written voice formal or casual?).

  5. Be descriptive. Show vs. tell. Share details that engage your audience's senses.

  6. Spell-check. For the love of all the puppies and rainbows... Use Grammarly to guarantee your writing is typo-free and your word choices mean what you think.

  7. Let it simmer. Give your writing some room to breathe. Leave your draft for a day (or at least an hour) so you can return to it with fresh eyes to catch potential missed opportunities.

So, to write better copy, be clear in your delivery and thoroughly get to the point of your message to avoid confusing (or alienating) your readers.

Next week, we'll discuss writing with authority. I'll see you then!
